Job Title: Apprentice Bricklayer
Reports to: Qualified Bricklayer
Job Type: Full-time, Apprenticeship
Job Summary:
As an Apprentice Bricklayer, you will learn the skills required to build, repair, and maintain walls, foundations, arches, and other structures using bricks, blocks, and other materials. Under the guidance of experienced bricklayers, you will gain hands-on experience both on-site and through formal training.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in laying bricks, blocks, and other masonry materials accurately and efficiently.
- Mix mortar and prepare materials and surfaces for bricklaying tasks.
- Interpret and follow construction drawings and blueprints.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Transport tools, materials, and equipment to and from work areas.
- Learn and adhere to health and safety regulations on the job site.
- Support qualified bricklayers with tasks as needed and gradually take on more responsibilities.
- Attend off-the-job training as part of your apprenticeship program.
Requirements:
- A keen interest in construction and bricklaying.
- Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
- Good physical fitness and ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Basic maths skills and ability to use measurement tools.
- Team player with strong communication skills.
- No prior experience necessary, but some site or manual labor experience is a plus.
In Ireland, becoming an apprentice bricklayer falls under the national apprenticeship system, which is managed by SOLAS (the Further Education and Training Authority). The minimum criteria required is as follows:
1. Age Requirement:
- You must be at least 16 years old.
2. Educational Requirement:
- Minimum of Grade D in five subjects in the Junior Certificate (or equivalent).
- Alternatively, if you don’t meet this requirement, you may still be eligible:
- Through an approved Pre-Apprenticeship Course.
- Or by passing an assessment test administered by SOLAS.
