Role Summary
We are seeking a Senior Data Modeler to join our Data Platform Delivery Team responsible for supporting the design, development and maintenance of canonical data models that underpin SMBC’s financial systems and reporting capabilities. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual with a passion for data analysis/modelling for data in financial services sector to learn and grow in a supportive environment. You will work closely with experienced data modelers and architects and collaborate with cross-functional teams to support various data initiatives. The ideal candidate should have a solid foundation in database concepts, strong knowledge of financial services data domain and strong analytical thinking.
Background
The newly created EMEA Data & Analytics Technology team has been put in place to deliver data integration, reporting, and analytics services to the SMBC EMEA business. It exists within the wider ITSD department that is responsible for all IT delivery to the SMBC EMEA enterprise. The team deliver data and analytics solutions to FO P&L business lines, cross business line departments (eg Finance, Risk, Operations, etc), and the Data Office as a key client. This is within a complex systems environment which has been built over several years and is looking to be re-architected for the next phase of SMBC EMEA growth.
Will be working in team of 40-50 IT staff within a department of 250+
Will deliver robust, reliable, performant, and maintainable components of the Data Platform for use across the SMBC EMEA entity covering capital markets and corporate banking activities.
Position Description
Design, implement and maintain high quality physical data models across investment banking domains.
Collaborate with other data modellers, architects and business stakeholders to translate complex business and regularity requirements into effective data models.
Map external partner and vendor data (clients, products, trades) into canonical models, ensuring consistency and interoperability.
Apply and promote best practice, standards and modelling methodologies.
Perform peer reviews of data models, ensure quality, scalability and adherence to standards.
Stay up to date with industry standards and bring these into the design process.
Collaborate with logical data modelers in Data Management Office.
Document data models and definitions.
Skills and Experience
Essential
Extensive experience working in a data-centric environment with a proven track record in financial services.
Understanding of data modelling principles (eg: relationships, normalization, star/snowflake schemas)
Experience with enterprise data modelling tools (eg: ER/Studio, Erwin)
Deep knowledge of capital markets and/or investment banking products (bonds, repos, FX, derivatives)
Strong analytical skills with the ability to understand complex data requirements, analyse data sets, and solve data-related problems.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, share ideas, and contribute to group discussions.
Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work with a focus on accuracy and precision.
Proven ability to work independently on large scale projects while contributing effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Exposure to concepts like Data Lake, Data Mesh, Medallion Architecture
Desirable
Familiarity with SQL or NoSQL data stores.
Familiarity with industry standard frameworks and formats (eg: FpML, BIAN, FIBO)
Experience of Azure Fabric or Databricks or similar.
Exposure to agile delivery practices
