About the Role
We are seeking a Site Supervisor - Rail to support the safe, efficient, and compliant supervision of construction activities on major rail and transportation infrastructure projects.
Reporting to the Construction Manager or Senior Site Supervisor, the role will provide day-to-day supervision across assigned works throughout planning, design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and completion. The successful candidate will monitor contractor performance, coordinate site activities, maintain accurate records, and ensure works comply with contract requirements, approved designs, programme milestones, and applicable safety, environmental, and quality standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Manage the day-to-day supervision of assigned work areas or construction packages under senior direction.
Support construction readiness reviews and monitor contractor performance across assigned works.
Provide site-based construction input throughout the planning, design, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and completion phases.
Contribute to constructability reviews, construction methodologies, logistics, sequencing, phasing, and tender assessments.
Ensure works are delivered safely, on programme, and in accordance with contract requirements, approved drawings, and technical specifications.
Promote and enforce a strong site safety culture through regular engagement, inspections, and prompt resolution of safety concerns.
Undertake formal safety tours, assurance activities, and site inspections, ensuring findings are recorded and closed out appropriately.
Work with the Construction Manager and project planners to support detailed schedules, milestones, site resources, and deliverables.
Monitor progress against the approved programme and promptly address or escalate potential delays, constraints, and delivery risks.
Support the development and implementation of mitigation and recovery plans.
Coordinate with project teams, designers, contractors, and stakeholders to maintain efficient site operations and manage interfaces.
Ensure works comply with contract specifications, approved drawings, applicable legislation, industry standards, planning conditions, and environmental requirements.
Monitor the implementation of health, safety, environmental, quality, and construction assurance procedures.
Implement and maintain robust Inspection and Test Plan processes and ensure inspection records are complete, accurate, and traceable.
Inspect completed works and assess readiness for formal inspection, testing, commissioning, or handover.
Record inspection outcomes and monitor the completion of defects, non-conformances, and remedial works.
Evaluate site progress against contract documentation, programme requirements, and agreed milestones.
Act as a day-to-day site contact for contractors, resolving routine matters and escalating significant site, interface, safety, technical, programme, or quality issues.
Provide clear and accurate site progress, assurance, risk, change, and performance information to the Construction Manager or Senior Site Supervisor.
Coordinate assigned site activities and inspection coverage, and support consistent application of site safety, quality, assurance, and reporting procedures.
Monitor and assess the competence and performance of contractor personnel before and during site activities.
Report site progress, risks, safety concerns, quality issues, changes, and proposed resolutions.
Undertake additional duties as required to support project delivery and reflect the evolving needs of the business.
Key Requirements
Degree or relevant qualification at NFQ Level 6 or 7, or equivalent, in Engineering, Construction, Project Management, or a related discipline.
Between 5 and 10 years' relevant construction or engineering experience, including at least 3 years supervising rail, transportation, or comparable major infrastructure activities.
Experience supervising assigned construction works through delivery, inspection, testing, commissioning, and completion.
Ability to coordinate contractors and site activities, resolve day-to-day issues, take ownership of assigned works, and escalate material concerns appropriately.
Demonstrated experience supervising the construction delivery of complex infrastructure works.
Experience working on rail, transportation, or comparable multidisciplinary infrastructure projects.
Strong knowledge of construction processes, materials, site methodologies, logistics, sequencing, and techniques.
Knowledge of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations and associated Irish construction legislation.
Demonstrated commitment to maintaining high standards of health, safety, environmental compliance, and quality.
Experience applying Inspection and Test Plans and construction assurance procedures.
Knowledge of NEC4 contracts and an understanding of commercial project requirements.
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, construction programmes, and contract documentation.
Strong communication, teamwork, organisational, problem-solving, and reporting skills.
Additional professional qualifications or membership of an appropriate body, such as MCIOB, MICE, or equivalent, would be advantageous.
Full clean driving licence and flexibility to travel to project sites as required.
