AtkinsRéalis Ireland is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to strengthen our drinking water and wastewater process engineering technical leadership, with a particular focus on bioresources (sludge and resource recovery). You will take a lead role in the design and delivery of drinking water, wastewater, and bioresources projects across Ireland, supporting major clients (including Uisce Éireann (Irish Water) and other public/private sector clients) from feasibility through detailed design to construction/commissioning support and providing technical assurance.
The role suits an experienced water leader who combines deep technical expertise with the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, manage delivery risk, shape scopes, support bids, and mentor engineers—while embedding safe design, quality assurance, and sustainable outcomes.
Technical leadership & project delivery
-
Lead the process engineering design of water, wastewater treatment and bioresources projects, ensuring high-quality outputs aligned with relevant standards and client requirements.
-
Direct and review delivery across project stages: feasibility, optioneering, concept, detailed design, contract documents, and construction/commissioning support.
-
Provide technical leadership in water, wastewater and bioresources / sludge treatment, which may include sludge thickening, digestion (including anaerobic digestion), pre-treatment, dewatering, drying, odour control, emissions considerations, and resource recovery opportunities.
-
Promote strong process safety practice and appropriate risk techniques (e.g., facilitating/leading HAZOP-style safety reviews where required by the project).
Project management, commercial & governance
-
Support/lead the definition of briefs, scopes of work, deliverables, programmes and budgets, and manage delivery against milestones.
-
Work collaboratively with Project Managers to ensure contractual compliance and robust delivery governance, including effective management of design risks and interfaces.
-
Contribute to the preparation/review of technical specifications, reports and contract documents, maintaining strong attention to detail and QA compliance.
-
Bring awareness of common contract models used in Ireland/UK water delivery (e.g., FIDIC, NEC, Public Works, and client-specific forms as applicable).
Leadership, people & capability growth
-
Shape and grow drinking water, wastewater and bioresources team design capability (tools, standards, training, ways of working), sharing knowledge across Ireland and wider teams.
-
Line manage, mentor, and coach engineers.
-
Build a high-performing culture, supporting professional development and technical excellence.
Business development & client relationships
-
Support and/or lead winning work: identify opportunities, contribute to tenders and proposals, shape value propositions, and support pricing inputs as appropriate to level.
-
Build trusted client relationships and represent AtkinsRéalis in key meetings, workshops and stakeholder forums.
Qualifications & professional standing
-
Degree (Level 8 or equivalent) in Chemical, Process, Environmental, or Civil Engineering (or closely related discipline).
-
Chartered (or working towards) with a relevant professional body such as Engineers Ireland (and/or an equivalent recognised institution).
Experience
-
Significant experience working with Uisce Éireann and their ways of working.
-
Significant experience in water and wastewater treatment process engineering and delivering design outputs within a consultancy and/or contractor delivery environment.
-
Demonstrable experience across multiple lifecycle stages (feasibility to detailed design; ideally some construction/commissioning support).
-
Strong bioresources/sludge experience—such as anaerobic digestion, solids handling, dewatering, odour management, emissions considerations, and/or sludge treatment technology selection and design.
-
Experience leading design delivery (including multidisciplinary coordination) and setting/maintaining high QA standards.
-
Working knowledge of Ireland/UK design practices and common water-sector contract forms.
Skills & behaviours
-
Strong communication skills and confidence in client-facing technical leadership.
-
Proven ability to manage competing priorities, lead teams, and deliver quality outputs on time and within budget in a collaborative manner within a multi-disciplinary environment.
-
Commitment to safe design and a proactive approach to risk identification and mitigation.
-
Common-sense approach to problem solving.
-
Strong relationship-building skills.
