This role is employed by Ardrar Ltd, which operates under separate terms and conditions to Bord Gáis Energy. Together we’re helping homes, farms and businesses cut costs, reduce emissions, and transition to cleaner energy.
The Role
We are seeking a Commercial Solar PV Design Engineer to support the next phase of transformation as we accelerate our transition to a more sustainable energy future. This role is central to our technical delivery, responsible for designing optimised, compliant, and cost-effective solar PV systems for commercial, industrial, and agricultural customers across Ireland.
You will work closely with our sales, project management, and installation teams to translate customer requirements and site conditions into engineered solutions that maximise energy yield, meet grid connection requirements, and align with project budgets and timelines.
Core Responsibilities
System Design & Engineering
- Design and develop detailed solar PV proposals for rooftop and ground-mounted commercial solar PV systems (typically 50 kWp to 5 MWp).
- Conduct virtual and physical site assessments to evaluate solar resources, perform shading analysis, and determine optimal system configuration.
- Create detailed technical reports including module layouts, string configurations, and array designs that maximise energy production while respecting structural, electrical, and fire safety constraints.
- Prepare single-line diagrams (SLDs), three-line diagrams, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and earthing/lightning protection designs.
- Perform DC and AC cable sizing, voltage drop calculations, and protection device coordination.
- Select and specify major equipment including PV modules, inverters, mounting structures, combiner boxes, and balance of system components.
- Use industry-standard software (PVsyst, Helioscope, or equivalent) to perform energy yield simulations and estimate system production.
- Conduct shading and loss analysis, incorporating weather data, soiling assumptions, degradation rates, and system performance ratios.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Provide technical support to the commercial sales team during the tender and proposal stage, including design, yield estimates, and equipment specifications.
- Create detailed pricing files including full Bill of Materials (BOM) for each project.
- Liaise with suppliers to get up to date pricing for materials.
- Work closely with project managers to resolve design-related RFIs, review contractor submittals, and support construction-phase engineering.
- Collaborate with structural and civil engineers on racking, foundation, and roof loading assessments for complex installations.
- Provide technical guidance to installation and commissioning teams, troubleshooting design or construction issues in the field.
Technical Documentation & Compliance
- Prepare engineering deliverables including stamped drawings, design specifications, equipment submittal and as-built drawings.
- Ensure all designs comply with Irish and EU standards, building regulations, ESB Networks grid connection requirements, and SEAI grant specifications.
- Support pre-install team by preparing technical documentation for ESB Networks and local authority planning submissions.
Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent relevant industry experience).
- Minimum 2–3 years' experience in commercial or utility-scale solar PV system design.
- Proficiency in solar design software such as PVsyst, Helioscope, Opensolar or equivalent.
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD or similar CAD software for producing construction-ready drawings.
- Solid understanding of solar PV technology, electrical systems, and grid interconnection requirements.
- Knowledge of Irish and EU electrical standards, building regulations, and ESB Networks grid connection processes.
- Experience preparing single-line diagrams, cable sizing calculations, and Bills of Materials.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Full clean driver's license (site visits required).
