Job Summary
The Health & Safety Officer plays a key role in promoting and maintaining a safe working environment for all employees across the organisation. Based in Midleton, Co. Cork, this position is responsible for supporting health & safety compliance across four operational sites throughout Ireland.
The successful candidate will work closely with managers and site leadership teams to embed a proactive safety culture, ensure compliance with Irish health & safety legislation, maintain company policies and procedures, conduct risk assessments, investigate incidents and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
· Deliver and coordinate engaging health and safety training programmes across all Irish sites for employees and management.
· Work collaboratively with site management teams to promote consistent safe working practices across all locations.
· Conduct workplace inspections, audits and compliance reviews to ensure a safe working environment.
· Reviewing operational procedures and Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) to ensure they remain practical, compliant and effectively implemented.
· Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses using recognised root cause analysis techniques, identifying appropriate corrective and preventative actions.
· Work with site managers to identify potential risks and training needs to improve safety performance.
· Maintain accurate records relating to training, near miss, incidents, inspections, risk assessments and audit findings.
· Promote and embed a positive health and safety culture across all sites.
· Develop and implement initiatives that support continuous improvement in health and safety performance.
· Support managers during internal, customer and third-party audits.
· Ensure the business remains compliant with current Irish health and safety legislation and industry best practice.
· Effectively prioritise workload and provide support across multiple operational sites.
· Monitor health and safety KPIs and prepare reports for management.
· Support emergency planning, business continuity and crisis management activities where required.
Health & Safety Responsibilities
Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, all employees have a legal duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety, and that of others who may be affected by their actions.
In line with this, employees are expected to:
· Comply with all company Health and Safety policies, procedures and Safe Systems of Work (SSOW).
· Use equipment, machinery, materials and safety devices correctly and responsibly and not misuse anything provided for safety purposes.
· Carry out work in accordance with approved procedures, training and site standards.
· Wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and utilise all required safety controls.
· Immediately report accidents, incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions, regardless of if an accident occurred.
· Cooperate with investigations into accidents and incidents.
· Suggest improvements to enhance health and safety performance.
· Be familiar with emergency procedures, including evacuation processes and incident response processes.
· Maintain high standards of house keeping and workplace organisation to minimise risk.
· Participate in mandatory health and safety training.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Membership of IOSH (desirable; however, training and development support will be provided for the right candidate).
- Train-the-Trainer qualification (desirable).
- Strong knowledge of Irish health and safety legislation, including the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and associated regulations (desirable or willingness to develop this knowledge).
- Experience working within BRCGS, ISO or other accredited management systems.
- Understanding of risk assessment principles and HACCP.
- Experience working within multi-site logistics, warehousing, cold storage or food distribution environments.
- Experience implementing or supporting behavioural safety programmes (desirable).
- Experience leading or supporting internal and external audits (e.g. BRCGS, ISO and customer audits).
- Ability to interpret legislation and compliance requirements and apply them within operational environments.
- Experience developing and maintaining compliance frameworks and audit schedules.
- Ability to analyse and interpret health and safety performance data.
- Experience producing KPIs, dashboards and trend analysis reports (desirable; however, training and development support will be provided for the right candidate).
- Experience designing and delivering structured training programmes (desirable).
- Ability to assess training effectiveness and employee competency.
- Experience promoting a culture of continuous learning and safety improvement.
- Strong influencing skills with the ability to positively challenge behaviours at all organisational levels.
- Confident in delivering presentations, inductions, training sessions and toolbox talks.
- Experience working cross-functionally and managing competing priorities.
- Self-motivated, proactive and capable of working independently across multiple sites.
- Excellent attention to detail with a practical, solution-focused approach.
- Full clean Category B driving licence and willingness to travel regularly between sites.
Authority & Limitations
· No authority to commit to capital expenditure.
· Must operate within company policies, procedures and delegated authority limits.
· Any significant policy changes or operational deviations require approval from senior management.
· Responsible for providing guidance and recommendations but not for making operational decisions outside delegated authority.
