Job Purpose
The Yard Manager is responsible for leading the day-to-day operation of the yard, ensuring a safe, efficient and customer-focused environment. The role is accountable for managing the yard team, maintaining high standards of stock accuracy, handling, storage and presentation, and delivering excellent service to both trade and retail customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, motivate and develop the yard team to deliver outstanding customer service.
- Manage the daily operation of the yard, including stock storage, order picking, customer collections and fleet management.
- Maintain high standards of stock accuracy by ensuring the correct products and quantities are selected, issued and recorded.
- Ensure all stock is handled, stored and protected appropriately to minimise damage and loss.
- Ensure the safe loading and unloading of vehicles and the efficient movement of stock.
- Work closely with the Stock Control Team to maintain stock accuracy and support regular stock counts.
- Ensure the yard is clean, organised, safe and presented to company standards.
- Plan staff rotas and allocate workloads to meet business needs.
- Work closely with the Sales Team and Branch Manager to ensure orders are fulfilled accurately and on time.
- Promote a strong Health and Safety culture, ensuring compliance with company policies and relevant legislation.
- Coach and support team members to encourage continuous improvement and high performance.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency and enhance the customer experience.
Skills and Experience
- Previous experience managing or supervising a busy yard, warehouse or builders’ merchant.
- Strong knowledge of building materials, timber, hardware and construction products.
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Good organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads.
- Computer literate, with experience using stock management systems.
- A proactive, hands-on approach with strong problem-solving skills.
- A valid Safe Pass.
- Forklift certification.
- Experience in transport, logistics, stock accuracy or stock control.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation within a warehouse or builders’ merchant environment.
