A business and finance estimator (often called a cost estimator or commercial analyst) calculates the total time, labor, materials, and overhead expenses required to complete a project or manufacture a product. They play a critical role in strategic planning, budgeting, and ensuring bids remain profitable and competitive.
Core Responsibilities
- Cost Analysis: Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, or project requirements to break down the scope of work and estimate the quantities needed.
- Bid & Tender Preparation: Compile detailed, data-driven cost estimates and bid packages to help the sales team win new contracts without compromising profit margins.
- Vendor Coordination: Research market rates and solicit competitive quotes from suppliers, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Risk Assessment: Identify potential financial risks, evaluate currency exchange rates, and factor in inflation or changing market conditions.
- Budget Monitoring: Track the project life cycle by comparing estimated costs against actual expenses, explaining variances, and identifying cost-saving (or "value engineering") opportunities.
- Key Skills & Qualifications
- Financial Modeling: Strong ability to build, maintain, and analyze cost models using advanced spreadsheet software and specialized databases.
- Data Literacy: High proficiency in analytical tools like Microsoft Excel, SAP, or Power BI.
- Commercial Awareness: A solid understanding of profit margins, procurement processes, and contract terms.
- Communication: Exceptional verbal and written skills to present bids to senior stakeholders, negotiate with suppliers, and advise project managers.
- Education & Experience: Typically requires a degree in finance, business, economics, or engineering, alongside prior industry experience in commercial analysis, surveying, or cost accounting.
Pay: €50,000.00-€90,000.00 per year
