Graphic Designer – Part-time (Phoenix Magazine)

The Phoenix Magazine Est. 1983 is Ireland’s leading Current Affairs Magazine and is published fortnightly (every two weeks). The Phoenix publishes the Inside Stories from Irish politics, business, the arts and racing. It is also a satirical magazine with a popular humour section and cartoons.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Graphic Designer role is to lay out the magazine each issue. There is a format and branding that has been used for many years which the Graphic Designer must follow. Laying out the articles and photos is much of the work. There is also some graphic design involved in larger articles as well as the humour section.
The hours are spread over the bi-weekly production schedule:
· Thursday: 12pm-6pm
· Friday: 9:30am-5:30pm
· Sunday: 1pm-6pm
· Monday: 8am – 6:30pm
· Tuesday: 8am – 8pm
· Wed: 10am-3pm
There is also an Annual edition published once a year which has a longer production schedule (2 / 3 weeks).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Receive articles and lay them out on specific pages in magazine
- Find photos from photo agencies and place them onto the pages
- Apply design skills to fit all text and images into their correct position on pages
- Lay out the front cover and design each issue
- Work with editors, make changes to the layout on tight deadlines
- Export PDFs for print and web
- Upload the magazine to our PDF archive once published
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- A degree in Graphic Design or related field is preferred
- At least 3 - 4 years of experience in a Graphic Design role, ideally within a publishing environment, a magazine or newspaper
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite including Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop
- A strong understanding of print production processes, artwork setup and preparing print-ready files
- Experience creating assets for both digital and print channels
- A good understanding of typography, layout, colour and brand consistency
- Ability to interpret briefs and translate them into effective creative solutions
- Experience working with printers, production suppliers and external agencies
- Ability to work under time constraints and meet deadlines
- Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with Marketing, Sales and external contributors
- A positive attitude and a proven team player
- A creative thinker with the ability to generate fresh ideas and concepts
Pay: €28,600.00 per year
