Kindergarten Homeroom Teacher, Nanchang, China
Finished your degree and not sold on the graduate-scheme grind back home? Here's a route plenty of people don't seriously look at until they're already out here. A well-established kindergarten in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi in central China, is hiring a homeroom teacher to lead a class of 3–6 year olds. Start date is ASAP, ideally August.
Nanchang isn't Shanghai or Beijing, and that's the point. It's a proper Chinese city with high-speed rail links across the country, far cheaper rent and day-to-day costs, and a much gentler learning curve than the megacities. On this salary, in this city, you actually save money rather than just funding the experience. A lot of teachers use a year or two here as a financial reset while seeing a part of the world most people never reach.
The role You'll be the main teacher for your own class of young learners, planning lessons, building routines, and helping kids find their feet in English through play, songs, and structured activities. Monday to Friday, no weekends.
What you'll need
- A passport from Ireland, the UK, (this is a hard requirement for the Chinese work permit, not a preference)
- A Bachelor's degree in any discipline Education, Early Years, English, or a related field is a bonus but not essential
- A 120-hour TEFL/TESOL certificate (if you don't have one yet, it's straightforward to complete online before you fly out)
- Some experience with 3–6 year olds. Formal kindergarten or early-years teaching experience is preferred, but genuine experience working with young children counts too.
What's on offer
- 20,000–27,000 RMB per month before tax (roughly €2,600–€3,400, and it stretches a long way in Nanchang)
- Full visa and work-permit support
- Housing allowance or a furnished apartment provided
- Full pay through the winter and summer holidays, plus a Christmas break
- Airfare subsidy to get you there
- Medical examination arranged on arrival
- Insurance coverage included
