Mechatronics Engineer – Robot Integration & Connectivity
Team: Haeger Europe Location: Europe (Preferred: Galway, Ireland HQ; Remote options: Germany, Netherlands, etc.) Travel: Regular travel across Europe (customer sites, partners, Haeger facilities)
1) Business Rationale (Internal)
Automation within European manufacturing is rapidly increasing, and customers expect seamless integration between Haeger machines and collaborative or industrial robots—particularly Universal Robots (UR) and FANUC. To meet these demands, Haeger Europe requires dedicated technical capability to:
· Engineer robust robot-machine integrations
· Develop standardized automation cell concepts
· Ensure alignment with European safety standards
· Support customers across multiple countries
· Provide structured technical feedback into global R&D
While future involvement with the T-Series and E-Drive control platforms is possible, the immediate priority is developing and supporting robot integration solutions across the European market.
This role directly collaborates with the U.S. controls team and the China R&D organization to ensure consistent architecture, shared best practices, and globally aligned development.
2) Role Purpose
The Mechatronics Engineer will lead the design, development, and deployment of robot-integrated solutions for Haeger machinery throughout Europe.
Core responsibilities include:
· Integrating UR and FANUC robots with Haeger machines
· Implementing industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profinet)
· Creating standardized automation cell templates
· Ensuring compliance with European machine and robot safety standards
· Supporting controls roadmap alignment with global engineering teams
Although support for commissioning and troubleshooting will be necessary, the primary focus of the role is integration engineering, not reactive field service.
3) Key Responsibilities
Robot Integration & Automation Cell Development
· Develop UR and FANUC robot programs and workflows.
· Implement robot-machine handshakes, I/O exchange, safety signals, and sequencing.
· Validate robustness, timing, and reliability of integrated workflows.
· Define standardized robot-cell architectures for repeatable applications.
Controls & Interface Engineering
· Implement communication interfaces using: Modbus TCP/RTU Profinet Ethercat
· Support enhancements to Haeger machine controls to improve robot compatibility.
· Develop and document integration best practices, error handling, and recovery routines.
European Application & Market Adaptation
· Translate customer requirements into engineered automation concepts.
· Ensure integrations comply with European safety, CE regulations, and plant standards.
· Develop reusable configuration packages for common European use cases.
Collaboration with Global R&D
· Serve as the European technical interface for robot and connectivity topics.
· Coordinate development requests and structured issue resolution with U.S. and China R&D.
· Collaborate with U.S. controls engineering to align integration strategies.
· Participate in global onboarding activities to build shared platform knowledge.
Installed Base & Integration Support
· Provide second-level technical support for complex robot integration issues.
· Support commissioning and optimization at customer sites across Europe.
· Assist with Haeger machine controls topics (including C# or microcontroller systems) when needed.
Connectivity & Data Integration
· Support MES and IT/OT connectivity when required by customers.
· Contribute to secure, scalable communication architectures.
· Validate communication performance in real customer environments.
Compliance & Safety
· Ensure all robot-machine integrations comply with CE and European safety standards.
· Support safety risk assessments, functional safety considerations, and documentation.
· Work with customer safety teams to confirm validation and sign-off requirements.
