About the Role
Tarstone Road Maintenance is seeking an experienced and motivated Polymer Modified Mastic Asphalt Production Manager to oversee the safe, efficient, and high-quality production of polymer modified mastic asphalt materials for road maintenance and ironwork reinstatements.
This is a hands-on leadership role suited to an individual with strong technical knowledge of asphalt production processes, quality standards, operational planning, and team supervision. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring production targets, product quality, compliance, and operational efficiency are consistently achieved.
The Production Supervisor/Manager will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end production of polymer modified mastic asphalt (PMMA), ensuring all output meets the stringent technical and safety standards required in road maintenance applications. You will manage a small team, drive continuous improvement, and act as the primary liaison between the production floor and senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Operations
Supervise and coordinate all stages of polymer modified mastic asphalt production, ensuring efficient workflow, minimal downtime, and adherence to production schedules. Supervise the daily production of polymer modified mastic asphalt products.
- Coordinate plant operations to ensure production schedules and delivery deadlines are achieved.
- Monitor plant performance, material usage, and operational efficiency.
- Ensure all production activities comply with company procedures, industry standards, and health & safety regulations.
- Liaise with suppliers and procurement to maintain smooth workflow and material availability.
- Monitor stock levels and approve incoming material certifications.
- Plan preventative maintenance schedules and minimise production downtime.
- Troubleshoot operational or production issues quickly and effectively.
- Work closely with maintenance teams to schedule preventive maintenance on mixing plant and ancillary equipment to minimise unplanned downtime.
Quality Control & Compliance
Monitor and enforce product quality at every stage of production; conduct or oversee testing of raw materials and finished product in accordance with EN and TII/client specifications.
- Oversee quality control testing and inspection procedures for raw materials and finished products.
- Ensure asphalt mixtures meet required specifications, performance standards, and customer expectations.
- Maintain accurate production, testing, and calibration records.
- Conduct internal audits and support external audits where required.
- Monitor compliance with ISO standards, environmental requirements, and company quality systems.
- Identify areas for process improvement and implement corrective actions where necessary.
- Uphold and enforce all H&S regulations on site, conduct risk assessments, manage all OSH compliance, and ensure safe handling of hot bituminous materials.
Reporting & Administration
- Prepare and submit regular production reports to senior management.
- Maintain accurate documentation relating to production batches, stock levels, incidents, and maintenance.
- Assist management with operational planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
Team Leadership
Manage, mentor, and develop production operatives; conduct performance reviews, toolbox talks, and training sessions.
Ad Hoc Duties
- Contribute to any additional duties as reasonably required by management to support operational objectives.
Ideal Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience in mastic asphalt or hot-applied bituminous product manufacturing, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management capacity within a manufacturing or production environment.
- Proven knowledge of polymer modified bitumen (PMB's) and mastic asphalt formulation, including the role of SBS polymers and mineral fillers.
- Familiarity with relevant quality standards and associated TII specifications, production processes and plant operations.
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline — or equivalent industry experience.
- Experience with ISO 9001 quality management systems, internal auditing, and production documentation.
- Working knowledge of OSH procedures and hot-works safety requirements is essential.
- Proficiency in producing clear management reports, maintaining batch records, and working with production data.
- Full clean driving licence & own transport to site.
