Byrne-Mech Ltd is seeking an experienced Environmental, Health, Safety & Compliance Officer to manage and continually improve environmental, health, safety and regulatory compliance across our busy sheet-metal manufacturing facility in Athenry.
The successful candidate will have a practical, hands-on approach to maintain a safe workplace, meet environmental obligations and support the company’s wider compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Management
- Manage the company’s environmental compliance obligations, including applicable permits, licences, consents and reporting requirements.
- Liaise with the Environmental Protection Agency, Uisce Éireann, local authorities, environmental consultants and other relevant bodies.
- Manage trade-effluent requirements, environmental sampling, testing, monitoring and reporting.
- Oversee the management, storage and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
- Monitor environmental matters including effluent, emissions, water, energy, waste, noise and chemical storage.
- Investigate environmental incidents, spills or complaints and ensure appropriate corrective actions are completed.
- Identify opportunities to reduce waste, resource consumption and the company’s overall environmental impact.
Health & Safety
- Provide guidance to management and employees on health and safety legislation and best practice.
- Develop, implement and review policies, procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Carry out regular workplace inspections, internal audits and safety observations.
- Investigate accidents, incidents and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Coordinate employee inductions, manual-handling training, toolbox talks and other safety training.
- Ensure contractors, visitors, new machinery and work processes comply with company and legislative safety requirements.
- Liaise with the Health and Safety Authority, occupational-health providers, insurers and external consultants where required.
Regulatory Compliance
- Coordinate the company’s ongoing Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) compliance programme, including supplier information, import records and supporting documentation.
- Manage supplier environmental and material-compliance activities through the company’s Assent compliance platform.
- Coordinate supplier requests and declarations relating to REACH, RoHS, PFAS, conflict minerals and other applicable requirements.
- Assist with customer compliance questionnaires, declarations and audits.
- Work with purchasing, engineering, accounts and quality personnel to maintain accurate compliance records.
- Support and maintain the EHS elements of the company’s Integrated Management System.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate should have:
- A recognised third-level qualification in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management or a related discipline.
- A minimum of two years’ relevant experience, preferably within a manufacturing, engineering or industrial environment.
- Knowledge of Irish health and safety and environmental legislation.
- Practical experience in risk assessment, incident investigation and environmental compliance.
- Strong organisational, communication, report-writing and record-keeping skills.
- Good IT proficiency, including Microsoft Office.
- The initiative and ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
Desirable
- Experience in engineering, fabrication or similar manufacturing environment.
- Manual Handling Instructor or First Aid Responder qualification.
- Experience with trade-effluent monitoring, environmental sampling or waste compliance.
- Knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management-system requirements.
