Purpose of the Role
The Kennels Assistant is responsible for the daily care, welfare, and management of dogs housed within the kennel facility. This includes feeding, exercising, cleaning, and monitoring the health and behaviour of animals in a safe, clean, and organised environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Feed and water animals according to individual dietary requirements and schedules
- Clean and disinfect kennels, runs, bedding, and equipment daily to maintain high hygiene standards
- Exercise animals through walks, playtime, and supervised socialisation
- Monitor animals for signs of illness, injury, or distress and report concerns promptly to senior staff
- Administer medication as directed by kennel management or veterinary staff
- Maintain accurate records of feeding, exercise, health observations, and any incidents
- Assist with the arrival and departure of animals, including check-in/check-out procedures
- Handle animals safely and calmly, including those that may be nervous, reactive, or unwell
- Liaise professionally with owners regarding their animal's stay
- Ensure all health and safety procedures are followed
- Assist with laundry, general maintenance, and upkeep of kennel grounds and facilities
Essential Skills & Attributes
- Genuine love of animals and commitment to their welfare
- Physically fit and comfortable with manual handling, being outdoors in all weather, and being on your feet for extended periods
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work weekends/bank holidays on a rota basis
- Calm and confident temperament when handling animals, including in stressful situations
- Strong attention to detail, particularly around hygiene and health monitoring
- Good communication skills, both with colleagues and the public
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable
- Previous experience working with animals (kennels, veterinary practice, farm, rescue, or similar)
- First aid or animal first aid training
- Full driving licence
Pay: €15.00-€25.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 25.0 per week
