The Role
We are looking for an experienced, reliable and enthusiastic gardener/horticulturist to join our team and help us develop the maintenance side of our landscaping business.
We create high-quality gardens through our larger landscaping and garden projects, and we want to offer our clients an equally high standard of ongoing care once those gardens are completed.
This is an opportunity for the right person to take real ownership of the maintenance side of the business. Initially, the role will involve looking after a portfolio of our completed gardens, with the potential for the role and maintenance division to grow over time.
We are looking for someone who genuinely loves gardens and plants, takes pride in doing things properly, and enjoys seeing a garden mature and improve year after year.
Key Responsibilities
The role will include:
- Maintaining high-quality residential gardens to an excellent standard
- Pruning shrubs, hedges, climbers and small trees appropriately
- Plant care, deadheading, dividing, staking and seasonal maintenance
- Lawn care and general garden presentation
- Weeding, edging, mulching and soil improvement
- Identifying plant health, pest and disease issues
- Understanding what needs to be done in a garden throughout the seasons
- Maintaining newly completed gardens and helping planting schemes establish successfully
- Advising clients where appropriate on the ongoing care of their garden
- Keeping gardens tidy, attractive and presented to the standard expected of our business
- Taking responsibility for tools, equipment and the organisation of day-to-day maintenance work
- Feeding back any issues or opportunities identified while on site
The Person We're Looking For
More than anything, we are looking for someone dependable who has a genuine passion for gardening.
The ideal person will:
- Have strong practical gardening and horticultural experience
- Have good plant knowledge and an understanding of seasonal garden care
- Be reliable, punctual and organised
- Take pride in the quality and finish of their work
- Be comfortable working independently and using their own judgement
- Be friendly, trustworthy and confident dealing with clients
- Notice the small things and care about how a garden looks when they leave
- Be physically capable and comfortable working outdoors throughout the year
- Look after tools, vehicles and clients' properties with care
- Be interested in a stable, long-term position
- Enjoy gardening as a craft rather than simply seeing it as another job
Formal horticultural qualifications would be an advantage, but practical experience, plant knowledge, attitude and reliability are more important to us.
A full driving licence is essential
What Makes This Role Different
We are not looking for someone simply to cut grass and trim hedges.
Our aim is to provide proper horticultural maintenance for gardens that have had significant thought and investment put into their design and construction.
The successful person will have the satisfaction of taking gardens from completion through establishment and maturity, building relationships with clients and becoming the person they trust to look after their garden.
For someone with the right experience and attitude, there is also the opportunity to help shape and grow this part of the business.
Experience
Ideally, you will have experience in one or more of the following:
- Professional garden maintenance
- Horticulture
- Estate or private garden maintenance
- Landscaping with strong planting knowledge
- Garden centre/nursery work combined with practical gardening experience
We are particularly interested in hearing from experienced gardeners who are looking for a dependable, long-term role where their knowledge and experience will be valued.
