Position: Finance Business Partner

The Finance Business Partner will work closely with engineering, project management, and operational teams to provide financial insight, commercial support, and robust financial control across engineering projects. This role ensures projects are accurately costed, competitively priced, effectively monitored, and delivered within budget while supporting strategic decision-making through forecasting and financial analysis.
This role is ideal for a commercially focused finance professional who enjoys working alongside engineers and project teams to improve profitability, strengthen financial control, and support the successful delivery of mechanical engineering projects.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial & Pricing Support
- Partner with engineering teams to develop accurate cost estimates and pricing models for customer quotations and tenders.
- Review project assumptions, labour estimates, material costs, subcontractor costs, and overhead allocations.
- Support bid reviews to ensure commercial viability and target margin achievement.
- Provide financial input into contract negotiations and commercial decision-making.
Project Budgeting & Cost Control
- Develop and maintain project budgets from project initiation through completion.
- Monitor project costs against budget, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
- Work closely with Project Managers to understand project performance and financial risks.
- Ensure accurate allocation of labour, materials, overheads, and capital expenditure.
Forecasting & Financial Planning
- Produce monthly project forecasts, including revenue, costs, profitability, and cash flow.
- Support rolling forecasts and annual budgeting processes.
- Analyse project trends and provide early warning of cost overruns or delivery risks.
- Deliver scenario modelling to support business decisions.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare monthly financial reports highlighting project performance, margins, utilisation, and KPIs.
- Provide variance analysis against budgets and forecasts with clear explanations and recommendations.
- Support month-end and year-end financial close activities relating to projects.
Business Partnering
- Build strong relationships with Engineering Managers, Project Managers, Procurement, and Operations.
- Challenge and support operational decisions using financial analysis and commercial insight.
- Improve financial awareness across engineering teams through coaching and guidance.
- Attend project review meetings and contribute to decision-making.
Governance & Controls
- Ensure compliance with company financial policies and project governance procedures.
- Maintain strong internal controls over project costing, revenue recognition, and expenditure approvals.
- Support audit requirements and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting, and systems.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
- Experience in engineering, construction, project accounting, manufacturing, or industrial sectors.
- Strong commercial acumen with experience supporting operational teams.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with ERP systems.
- Strong analytical, communication, and influencing skills.
- Ability to translate financial data into practical business recommendations.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies.
- Collaborative and approachable business partner.
- Commercially minded with strong attention to detail.
- Proactive problem solver who can challenge constructively.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced project environment.
