Overview
We are looking for a Lead Civil Engineer to join the APC team! This is a full-time in-person role, based at our office in Limerick. The core working hours are 8:00am-5:00pm (including a 1-hour break), Monday to Friday.
Position Summary
The Lead Civil Engineer leads and delivers civil, structural, architectural (CSA) engineering activities for all projects and supports the O&M business on discipline-specific issues., and will be reporting to the Director of Engineering and Procurement.
Responsibilities
General Characteristics

Applies broad, deep knowledge of civil engineering in an EPC industrial environment.

Independently resolves complex technical issues and unusual engineering conditions.

Leads CSA work packages and guides engineering teams and subcontractors.

Interprets codes, standards, and regulations and ensures their application.
-
Maintains awareness of industry developments and best practices.
-
Represents the discipline in meetings with clients, contractors, authorities, and internal stakeholders.
Technical Responsibilities
-
Lead the development, review, and approval of all civil, structural, foundation, architectural, and geotechnical engineering deliverables.

Evaluate and interpret geotechnical reports, lab tests, subsurface risks, and provide foundation design guidance.

Ensure designs comply with EPC contract requirements, project specifications, Eurocodes (EN 1990-1999) and their Irish/UK National Annexes, Building Regulations (ROI/UK), relevant BS/IS standards, and all applicable planning, environmental, and permitting requirements.

Oversee the EOR to ensure design intent, scope conformance, quality, and coordination across disciplines.

Analyse complex engineering problems to determine design requirements, uncertainties, and constraints.

Develop design alternatives with consideration for constructability, safety, environmental constraints, and cost optimisation.

Ensure sustainability concepts and site development best practices are incorporated into CSA design.

Review and approve design drawings, calculations, specifications, reports, RFIs, and technical submittals.

Lead technical due diligence and engineering risk assessments during development and execution phases.

Establish internal design standards, lessons learned, and continuous improvement practices.

Use AutoCAD, Civil 3D, SmartPlant 3D, STAAD, Tekla, and other relevant software.

Maintain accurate digital records of technical work per document control requirements.
Program, Project, and Task Management
-
Plan and coordinate CSA engineering scopes, budgets, schedules, and resource loading.

Support bid/proposal teams with civil design input, quantities, preliminary layouts, risk identification, and concept engineering.

Perform schedule analysis, assess CSA risks, and propose mitigation strategies.

Prepare technical content for procurement packages, subcontract scopes, and material requisitions.

Support permitting documentation-site layouts, temporary works plans, drainage layouts, etc.
-
Coordinate multi-discipline interfaces (C&I, electrical, mechanical, process, EPCM partners).
Management, Supervision & Mentorship
-
Provide technical leadership and daily guidance to junior engineers, site civil engineers, designers, and subcontractors.

Mentor staff on technical, professional, and project execution skills.
-
Direct the work of EOR teams on major deliverables.
-
Support Project Engineering Manager by representing CSA engineering in coordination and reporting.
Construction Support & Field Engineering
-
Conduct site visits to evaluate civil/structural issues and verify construction conformance.
-
Provide field engineering support to the Civil Superintendent and construction teams.
-
Review and approve method statements, lifting plans, temporary works, earthworks plans, and quality records.
-
Troubleshoot and resolve CSA-related issues quickly to avoid schedule impacts.

Perform quantity verification (foundations, rebar, concrete, backfill, drainage, siteworks).
-
Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, constructability reviews, and CDM/PSDP processes as applicable.
Procurement & Subcontractor Interface
-
Support procurement in evaluating civil subcontractors, suppliers, piling contractors, steel fabricators, and building material vendors.

Review vendor technical documentation and ensure compliance with project requirements.
-
Lead technical negotiations with suppliers and subcontractors.

Prepare technical sections of EPC purchase orders and subcontracts.
Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality (HSEQ)
-
Maintain and implement ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 aligned practices.

Integrate safety and environmental considerations into design decisions.
-
Report non-conformances and support incident investigations.
-
Ensure civil engineering work complies with all safety legislation and company HSEQ policies.
Communication, Teamwork & Leadership
-
Communicate effectively with clients, authorities, project managers, EPC partners, site teams, and internal leadership.

Participate and lead engineering meetings, design reviews, progress meetings, and technical workshops.

Provide persuasive and strategic communication when defending design solutions or negotiating changes.

Represent the company professionally in all client and subcontractor interactions.
Business Development & Company Image
-
Support proposals, tenders, and business development efforts with civil engineering expertise.
-
Maintain strong relationships with client representatives, subcontractors, design partners, and regulatory authorities.

Attend industry events and support promotion of company capabilities.
-
Identify new opportunities and contribute to market intelligence for civil/structural scopes.
IT & Digital Engineering
-
Use and maintain project engineering software per company IT policy.
-
Upload, retrieve, and manage documents in collaboration platforms (SharePoint, InEight, ASITE etc.).
-
Ensure data privacy, cybersecurity, and digital communication standards are met.
-
Contribute to development and improvement of digital engineering workflows.
Desired Skills, Qualifications & Experience
-
Degree in Civil Engineering (Master's preferred).
-
8-15+ years experience in industrial/power-generation civil engineering.
-
Experience with EPC delivery models and management of EOR teams.
-
Strong geotechnical, foundation, site development, and structural knowledge.
-
Chartered Engineer (CEng) preferred.
-
Excellent communication, report-writing, and stakeholder management skills.
-
Strong problem solving, organisation, and leadership capability.
