Principal Accountabilities
- Design bespoke automated machinery and mechanical systems for the medical device and life sciences sectors.
- Develop innovative engineering concepts into fully functional machine designs using SolidWorks.
- Produce complex 3D CAD models, multi-part assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Generate detailed engineering drawings and technical documentation for manufacture and assembly.
- Support prototype development, testing, machine build, and design validation activities.
- Manage projects through the complete lifecycle, from concept design and detailed engineering to assembly, testing, commissioning, and customer installation.
- Work closely with Automation, Electrical, Manufacturing, and Tooling teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Participate in customer meetings, project reviews, and design presentations while maintaining excellent customer relationships.
- Ensure all machine designs comply with CE Machinery Directive and relevant safety standards.
- Maintain engineering documentation and drawing standards in accordance with company procedures and GAMP 5 requirements where applicable.
- Source mechanical components and liaise with suppliers to ensure materials are procured on time and within budget.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in machine design, manufacturing efficiency, and product performance.
- Deliver projects within agreed schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
Qualifications, Experience & Skills
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related Engineering discipline.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in Mechanical Design Engineering.
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including complex assemblies and detailed manufacturing drawings.
- Experience designing bespoke automated machinery or special purpose equipment.
- Ability to manage engineering projects from concept through to commissioning.
- Strong understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes and engineering principles.
- Experience producing technical documentation, engineering drawings, and Bills of Materials.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong project planning and time management abilities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Desirable
- Experience within the medical device, pharmaceutical, or life sciences industry.
- Knowledge of precision tooling and toolmaking.
- Understanding of GAMP 5 documentation standards.
- Experience with CE Marking and Machinery Safety Regulations.
- Familiarity with pneumatic systems, automation equipment, and motion systems.
- Experience supporting machine installation and commissioning at customer sites.
