Lead I&C / Life Safety Systems Engineer
Position summary:
The Lead I&C / Life Safety Systems Engineer will act as a senior technical lead and subject-matter expert for Instrumentation & Control systems and Life Safety Systems on complex, multi-discipline projects. The role will support advanced technology, semiconductor manufacturing, data centre, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and other high-tech industrial facilities, from early concept and master planning through detailed design, construction support, commissioning, and project close-out.
The successful candidate will lead and coordinate I&C and LSS design activities, provide technical direction to engineers and designers, interface with clients and vendors, and ensure that designs are safe, compliant, coordinated, constructible, and aligned with project scope, budget, and schedule requirements.
Responsibilities
- Act as the subject-matter expert for I&C and Life Safety Systems within the project or department, leading and controlling the technical design approach
- Independently lead design activities coordinating with multi-discipline engineering and design teams.
- Prepare and review engineering studies, basis of design documents, schematic designs, control philosophies, system descriptions, and design deliverables for new and existing systems.
- Develop, review, and coordinate I&C and LSS design deliverables including instrument lists, instrument datasheets, cable schedules, control system architecture, panel design information, installation details, and P&ID control content.
- Support the development of sequences of operation, system control narratives, cause and effect requirements, and functional descriptions in coordination with process, electrical, mechanical, and client system owners.
- Execute site master planning, concept design, preliminary engineering, detailed design, and construction support activities as part of a multi-discipline project team.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, HAZOP/HAZID workshops where applicable, constructability reviews, vendor bid evaluations, and technical clarification meetings.
- Provide technical support to project teams and operations teams in resolving complex process, plant, control, or life safety system issues.
- Coordinate with clients, vendors, contractors, and internal discipline leads to ensure technical requirements, deliverables, interfaces, and design changes are clearly communicated and managed.
- Support the preparation of proposals, scopes of work, schedules, budgets, resource plans, and project execution strategies.
- Identify and research future trends in semiconductor, advanced technology, automation, I&C, and life safety system design.
- Assist in the development and improvement of departmental systems, procedures, standards, templates, and knowledge management processes.
- Promote safe, compliant, efficient, and technically robust design solutions that support client operational, safety, maintainability, and project delivery requirements.
- Maintain awareness of relevant codes, standards, technologies, software tools, and market practices applicable to I&C and Life Safety Systems.
- Lead the design and coordination of Life Safety Systems, including fire detection and alarm systems, security interfaces and Toxic Gas Monitoring System (TGMS) and Hazardous Process Materials (HPM).
- Ensure LSS designs are developed in accordance with applicable EU, UK, Irish, US, NFPA, NEC, and project-specific standards, where applicable.
- Work closely with architectural, electrical, mechanical, process, fire protection, security, and construction teams to ensure life safety requirements are fully coordinated within the building and process design.
- Identify potential design risks, compliance issues, interface gaps, or operational constraints and propose appropriate mitigation measures.
- Display strong communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with multiple deadlines.
- Size and specify instruments and produce datasheets
- Develop control system architecture & Panel design for control systems
- Develop standard installation details.
- Update P&IDs with controls content.
- Produce control system philosophy with input from other disciplines as required.
- Produce instrument lists and cable schedules
Qualifications
- A Third Level Degree in an associated discipline
- 5-8 years' experience as a Senior Engineer
