Role Purpose:
As Deputy Head of Actuarial Function, you will assist in the management, leadership and oversight of EIID’s actuarial team while also playing the role of a senior leader across the wider International actuarial team. Your role will entail robust oversight and collaboration to ensure the accuracy of technical provisions, capital modelling (SCR and ORSA) and contribute to the Actuarial Function Report and Opinions. Strong management skills to support the team and positively influence wider stakeholders is critical.
This role will manage the day-to-day operations of the actuarial team, with support and oversight from the Head of Actuarial Function/Chief Reserving Actuary (based in the Dublin office). In addition to playing a key role in enhancing the team’s capabilities, the candidate will have responsibility for owning and developing key aspects of the Actuarial team’s processes, stakeholder management, business reporting, capital setting and contributing to the strategic direction of the actuarial team.
The role is broad with exposure to a wide network of business stakeholders (finance, underwriting, claims and operations) and other actuarial functions (e.g. pricing and performance management), project development and quarter/off-quarter activities. The successful candidate will work with autonomy in a supportive and encouraging environment. Key Accountabilities:
- Oversight and planning of EIID’s actuarial deliverables including GAAP reserving, Solvency II TPs, Actuarial Function Reports and Annual QRTs. SCR/ORSA (Standard Formula) capital oversight including driving model input and review, with support from the wider team.
- Management of a team of 3 actuaries (2 analyst and 1 qualified) based on Dublin.
- Setting of key actuarial assumptions and methods for both GAAP and SII purposes.
- Timely delivery and concise communication of internal and external (CBI, PRA) reporting.
- Quarterly reviews of reserves in respect of business written across international platforms.
- Undertake regular portfolio analysis of classes.
- Support the EIID Head of Actuarial Function by leading the production of the actuarial function reports and ORSA Opinion.
- Contribute and lead reserving discussions with underwriting, pricing, claims, finance, performance management and reinsurance to understand and improve underwriting results.
- Collaborate with pricing actuary’s and underwriters for sharing information, influencing and to support reserving/capital assumptions used.
- Continuously improve analysis and outputs to ensure it is at the forefront of the industry in-order to maintain commercial advantage.
- Develop, embedded and review appropriate controls over model inputs, parameters, judgements and outputs.
- As International Wholesale & Specialty (IW&S) continues to grow and evolve, the successful applicant will be heavily involved in the wider actuarial team’s journey and evolution to deliver quality tools and insights, which include:
- Identifying, planning and leading the execution of future enhancements to the reserving and capital modelling tools, approaches and add-value proposition.
- Modelling and coordinating inputs to parameter updates.
- Enhancing monitoring, MI and communication of key risks.
- Ensuring best practice and compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.
- Key stakeholders include finance, all actuarial functions, underwriting, claims, IT, senior management, CBI and external audit.
- As Deputy Head of Actuarial Function, you will be expected to both lead by example and play an active role in supporting the wider actuarial team’s professional development.
- This role will be highly visible and integrated as part of the wider actuarial team, with opportunity to collaborate, learn and contribute across the functions and business.
Professional Experience:
- Qualified Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (FIA) or similar.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Maths, Accounting, Economics, Statistics, Business or a similar field.
- In-depth knowledge and experience of GI reserving and capital modelling approaches.
- Management experience (desirable), evidence of empowering and developing others.
Skills & Abilities
- Excellent IT skills, e.g. MS Excel, MS Access, SQL, Power BI and ResQ.
- Strong reserve and reserve risk modelling.
- Standard formula modelling.
- Excellent organisational skills and a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to simply communicate modelling process and results with internal and external stakeholders, both verbally and through reports or presentations.
- Ability to implement and apply strong financial controls in a simple framework.
- A flexible and enthusiastic approach to work with a strong appetite to network, learn and develop.
