Purpose of the Role
The CNM2 is responsible for the operational management, clinical leadership, and professional development of nursing staff within the Oncology Day Unit and Infusion Suite. The post holder will ensure the delivery of safe, effective, patient-centred cancer and biologics care while maintaining high standards of clinical practice, governance, quality, and service delivery.
The CNM2 will play a key leadership role in supporting the strategic development and expansion of oncology services, including service redesign, workforce planning, and the transition to the new hospital facility. The role requires collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to ensure future oncology services are responsive to increasing patient demand and aligned with national cancer care standards and organisational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership and Patient Care

Provide visible clinical leadership and support to nursing and multidisciplinary teams.

Ensure the delivery of safe, high quality, evidence-based oncology care.

Maintain oversight of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, blood product administration, and other oncology treatments delivered within the unit.

Promote excellence in patient experience and person-centred care.

Ensure compliance with national and hospital oncology standards, policies, and guidelines.

Act as a clinical resource and expert practitioner for oncology nursing staff.
Operational Management
-
Manage the day-to-day operations of the Oncology Day Unit and Infusion Suite.

Ensure effective patient flow and optimal utilisation of treatment capacity.

Coordinate staffing resources to meet patient and service requirements.

Monitor activity levels, capacity, waiting lists, and service demands.

Escalate operational risks and service pressures appropriately.

Contribute to business continuity planning and service resilience.
Workforce Leadership and Staff Development

Lead, supervise, and support nursing and support staff within the department.

Foster a positive culture of professionalism, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Manage staff rostering, attendance, performance management, and annual appraisal processes.

Identify workforce requirements in line with current and future service needs.

Support recruitment, retention, succession planning, and on boarding of new staff.

Promote ongoing education and professional development in oncology nursing practice.
Quality, Safety and Governance

Ensure compliance with medication management, chemotherapy safety standards, infection prevention and control requirements, and clinical governance frameworks.

Lead incident review, risk management, and quality improvement initiatives.

Monitor and respond to clinical quality indicators and patient feedback.

Ensure accurate documentation and maintenance of clinical records.

Participate in audits and implement recommendations arising from findings.
Strategic Development and Service Expansion
Oncology Service Expansion
The CNM2 will support the continued growth and development of oncology services through:

Participation in strategic planning for the expansion of systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) services.

Development of new treatment pathways and models of care.

Capacity planning to accommodate increasing oncology activity.

Identification of workforce, equipment, and infrastructure requirements.

Supporting the introduction of new oncology treatments and technologies.

Working collaboratively with oncology consultants, pharmacy, management, and regional cancer services to enhance service provision.
New Hospital Development and Transition
The CNM2 will play a significant role in planning and preparing for the transition to the new hospital facility by:

Contributing to operational planning for the Oncology Day Unit and Infusion Suite within the new hospital.

Participating in service design and workflow development.

Assisting with workforce planning and service modelling for expanded capacity.

Supporting equipment planning, commissioning, and readiness activities.

Ensuring staff engagement and preparedness throughout the transition process.

Supporting the implementation of new systems processes, and patient pathways associated with the move.

Promoting safe and seamless continuity of care during service transition.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Work closely with oncology consultants, nursing management, pharmacy, allied health professionals, and support services.

Develop effective working relationships across hospital departments and external agencies.

Participate in multidisciplinary meetings and service planning forums.

Support integrated cancer care pathways across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.
Education, Research and Innovation

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications

Registered General Nurse with active registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).

Minimum of 5 years post-registration experience.

Minimum of 2 years oncology nursing experience.

Level 8 Oncology /Management essential
