Purpose of the Post:

The advanced practice service is provided by nurses who practice at a higher level of capability as independent, autonomous and expert advanced practitioners. The overall purpose of the service is to provide safe, timely, evidenced based nurse-led care to patients at an advanced nursing level.

This involves undertaking and documenting complete episodes of patient care, which include comprehensively assessing, diagnosing, planning, treating and discharging patients in accordance with collaboratively agreed local policies, procedures, protocols and guidelines and/or service level agreements/ memoranda of understanding.

Mercy University Hospital (MUH) operates as a supra regional centre for Advanced Endoscopy and IBD serving the 1.5 million people of Munster. It is a formal surveillance and research site for both the Barrett's Screening and the Bowel Screen Programmes. It has an on-site GI Physiology Laboratory offering a high-volume diagnostic service.

The Endoscopy Unit compromising of 3 Endoscopy Suites (2 other suites in development) is co-located with the tertiary HPB, Upper GI and Colorectal services in the MUH and facilitates a vast array of general anaesthetic (GA) dependent and non-GA dependent tertiary care.
The RANP/cANP will be:

Professionally accountable to the Director of Nursing (DON)

Clinically accountable to the supervising Consultant Gastroenterologist.
Responsibilities Include:
- The RANP - Endoscopy practices to a higher level of capability across the six domains of competences as defined by Bord Altranais agus Cnaimhseachais na hEireann (NMBI / Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) Advanced Practice (Nursing) Standards and Requirements (NMBI 2017).

Demonstrating accountability and responsibility for professional practice as a lead healthcare professional.

Articulating safe boundaries and engaging in timely referral and collaboration for those areas outside their scope of practice, experience and competence.

Conducting a comprehensive holistic health assessment using evidenced based frameworks to determine diagnoses and inform autonomous advanced nursing care.

Synthesising and interpreting assessment information particularly history including prior treatment outcomes, physical findings and diagnostic data to identify normal, at risk and subnormal states of health.

Providing leadership in the translation of new knowledge to clinical practice.

Educating others using an advanced expert knowledge base derived from clinical experience, on-going reflection, clinical supervision and engagement in continuous professional development.

Communicating effectively with the healthcare team through sharing of information in accordance with legal, professional and regulatory requirements.

Demonstrating clinical leadership in the design and evaluation of services.

Engaging in health policy development, implementation, and evaluation.

Identifying gaps in the provision of care and services pertaining to his/her area of advanced practice and apply the best available evidence.
Contribute to service development through appropriate continuous education, research initiatives, keeping up to date with nursing and medical literature, recent nursing and medical research and new developments in nursing and medical practice, education and management.

Eligibility Criteria:

Be a registered nurse with the NMBI or entitled to be so registered.

Are registered in the Advanced Nurse Practitioner Division of the NMBI Register maintained by the NMBI.

Have a broad base of clinical experience relevant to the advanced field of practice.
Candidates must possess the requisite knowledge and ability including a high standard of suitability and clinical, professional and administrative capacity to properly discharge the functions of the role.

- cANP: Be eligible to undertake a Master's Degree (or higher) in Nursing or a Master's Degree, which is relevant, or applicable, to the advanced field of practice. The Master's programme must be at Level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) / Quality & Qualifications Ireland (QQI), or equivalent. Educational preparation must include at least three modular components pertaining to the relevant area of advanced practice, in addition to clinical practicum.

cANP: Be currently undertaking a Master's Degree in Nursing (Advanced Practice Pathway) or be eligible to register to undertake additional Level 9 NFQ / QQI specific modules of a Master's Degree in Nursing (Advanced Practice Pathway) within an agreed timeframe. Educational preparation must include at least three modular components pertaining to the relevant area of advanced practice, in addition to clinical practicum.

RANP: Must possess a Master's Degree (or higher) in Nursing or a Master's Degree which is relevant, or applicable, to the advanced field of practice. Candidate Pathway Appointment:

Given the developmental nature of the Candidate ANP role, appointment to this post will be made on a Specific Purpose Contract, directly linked to participation in and completion of the approved candidacy pathway.
- The purpose of the contract is to enable the postholder to undertake the required education, training, and competency development necessary to meet the criteria for progression to the substantive (ANP) role.
- This wholetime appointment is subject to these terms set out below: The post-holder is expected to demonstrate achievement of the core and specific competencies deemed necessary to manage the identified scope of practice and successfully complete the required educational programme within the agreed pathway timeframe of two years.
