THE ROLE
The Irish Examiner is now recruiting digital journalists and reporters for its two-year Journalism Graduate Programme. This opportunity is aimed at graduates and early-career journalists who are interested in building a career in high-quality journalism across digital and print platforms. Successful candidates will be appointed to paid positions on our entry-level journalist pay scale.
As part of a busy, dynamic newsroom, successful candidates will gain experience across a range of areas including news, business, features and sport. You will learn how to craft compelling content that informs, educates and engages audiences, while developing the skills needed to succeed in modern journalism.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Research, write and edit accurate, engaging content for digital and print platforms.

Support the production of journalism across areas such as news, business, sport, culture and lifestyle.

Develop and produce digital content, which may include video, graphics, data visualisation, social media and digital production.

Apply strong editorial judgment, accuracy and fairness when covering stories and developing content.

Work to deadlines while maintaining high standards of writing, editing and presentation.

Build knowledge of audiences, platforms, SEO, social media and digital storytelling.

Collaborate with editors, reporters and wider newsroom colleagues across The Irish Times Group.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

A graduate or early-career journalist with a strong interest in journalism and the media.

Excellent writing, reporting and editing skills, with the ability to produce clean, accurate copy.

Strong editorial judgment, language skills and attention to detail.

A good working knowledge of current affairs and/or other subject areas covered by The Irish Times Group.

Interest in digital journalism, including areas such as video, social media, digital production, graphics or data visualisation.

Ability to work well under deadline pressure and adapt in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

Initiative, curiosity, flexibility and motivation to develop a career in journalism.

A driver's licence and owning your own car would be a distinct advantage for this role
APPLICATION TASK
As part of your application, please complete the following task:
Audiences want to find out more about the stories topping the news agenda, and explainers are a popular way of giving conveying further information and background detail in a bite-sized form for readers.
Draft an explainer piece to give some insight into a story of your choice that's in the news. The explainer can be text (500 words or less) or audio or video (3 mins or less) .
