Role Purpose:
The Staff Grade Occupational Therapist will provide a comprehensive occupational therapy service to patients within the acute hospital setting. The post holder will assess, treat, and support patients to maximise independence and functional ability, facilitate safe discharge planning, and contribute effectively within the multidisciplinary team.
The Occupational Therapist will work in accordance with professional standards, evidence-based practice, and hospital policies and procedures.
Skills / Experience:

Degree in Occupational Therapy recognised by the relevant professional body.
- Registration with CORU.

Clinical placement or post-qualification experience in an acute hospital or rehabilitation setting.
- Experience in discharge planning and functional assessment.

Strong assessment and clinical reasoning skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
- Effective time management and prioritisation skills in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of patient-centred care and rehabilitation principles.
Competence in clinical documentation and report writing.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
-
Assess patients' occupational performance, functional ability, cognition, mobility, perception, and activities of daily living (ADLs).
- Develop and implement individualised treatment and rehabilitation programmes.
- Provide timely occupational therapy intervention for patients in acute medical, surgical, orthopaedic, neurological, geriatric, respiratory, or critical care settings as appropriate.
- Complete discharge planning assessments to support safe and timely discharge.
- Recommend and arrange adaptive equipment, seating, splinting, pressure care, and environmental modifications where required.
- Assess home environments and provide recommendations to support community reintegration.
- Identify patients requiring onward referral to rehabilitation, community, or specialist services.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical documentation in line with legal and professional standards.
- Monitor and evaluate patient progress and modify treatment plans accordingly.
Participate in weekend or on-call services if required.

Multidisciplinary Team Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, social workers, dietitians, discharge coordinators, and other healthcare professionals.
- Attend ward rounds, case conferences, discharge planning meetings, and multidisciplinary meetings.
Provide education and advice to patients, families, carers, and staff regarding functional independence and rehabilitation goals.

Professional Responsibilities

Practice within the scope of Occupational Therapy professional standards and ethics.
- Maintain registration with the relevant regulatory body ( CORU).
- Participate in clinical supervision, staff meetings, in-service training, and continuing professional development (CPD).
- Engage in service evaluation, quality improvement initiatives, audits, and evidence-based practice.
- Supervise occupational therapy assistants and students where appropriate.
Comply with infection prevention and control, health and safety, safeguarding, and hospital policies.

Administrative Responsibilities

Prioritise and manage an acute caseload effectively.
- Maintain statistical records and contribute to departmental reporting requirements.
- Ensure appropriate use, storage, and maintenance of therapy equipment.
- Participate in service development initiatives within the OT department.
