Role Purpose:
The person in co-operation with the Consultant Histopathologist staff and the Chief Medical Scientist will participate in the implementation and management of an overall Histodissection service within the Histology laboratory.
The successful candidate will have:
- Demonstrated depth and breadth of post qualification Histodissection experience in a hospital cellular pathology laboratory as relevant to the role.
- Experience in dissecting a wide range of specimen types from skin biopsies to more complex large surgical specimens such as gastrointestinal, gynae, breast, lung and genitourinary specimens.
- Demonstrated involvement in the training and development of scientist dissectors. Candidates will be required to train in all categories up to and including category E specimens based on service requirements.
Approved qualification in Histodissection, the CPD certificate in Histopathological dissection courses (TU, Dublin) or the IBMS Diploma in Expert Practice in Histologic Dissection and Advance Specialist Diploma in Histodissection.

Skills / Experience:

Be registered or be eligible for registration, on the Medical Scientists Registrar.

Master's Qualification (MSc) or equivalent (NFQ Level 9) postgraduate qualification on the National Framework or Qualifications (NFQ) maintained by the Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) in a Science related discipline,as relevant to the role. Validated by the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine.

Specialist competency to dissect complex resection specimens that have suspected cancer or other significant pathology.

Demonstrate excellent understanding and have good experience of Histology.
- Experience in Histodissection techniques as relevant to the role.
- Demonstrate good decision making and problem-solving skills.

Demonstrate evidence of effective planning and organising skills including awareness of resource management and importance of value for money.
- Demonstrate ability to manage deadlines and effectively handle multiple tasks
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and manage change.
- Demonstrate an awareness of the Laboratory user and the importance of the patient/client at all times.
- Demonstrate awareness of the importance of quality in Laboratory practice.

Key Responsibilities:

Actively participate in the improvement and development of services within the Laboratory Demonstrate behaviour consistence with the mission and values of the Hospital.

Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or Hospital information.

Responsible for the macroscopic examination, description, and dissection of surgical and biopsy tissues.

Participate in the work of the department, both routine and specialised, as required by the Chief Medical Scientist in the area of Histodissection.
- Participate in the preparation and review of standard operating procedures (SOPs) or other laboratory documents in accordance with the laboratory's document control policy.

Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.

Responsible for working collaboratively with staff and managers to promote, design and implement improvements in the Histology Laboratory.
- Responsible for organisation of workload, prioritising tasks to ensure the effective running of the Histology Laboratory in the assigned areas.

Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the Hospital and ethical codes.
- Identify areas of applied research that will be beneficial to service user expectations.
- In conjunction with the Chief Medical Scientist and Consultant lead, ensure the appropriate training and competency of staff within the assigned sections.
- Ensure that techniques are appropriate for use and in compliance with ISO15189 standards.
- Ensure that policy relating to the relevant laboratory record keeping is followed.
- Participate on Hospital and/or external committees as required.
