Job Description - Steri Nurse
Reporting to: Practice Manager/Lead Dental Nurse
Summary of Sterilization Role:
The Sterilisation Nurse is responsible for providing excellence in service through the efficient management of instruments through the practice. The Sterilisation Nurse will become a valued member of our wonderful team. Duties will include compliance with our IPC policy, decontamination process and sterilisation logs, processing of instruments, storage of sterilised instruments. Ensure that all decontamination procedures are being followed correctly.
The Sterilisation Nurse will work in close partnership with the dental team, take instruction from the Dentist and Practice Manager, and have the ability to take ownership and responsibility for clinical policies and procedures in the practice; as set out by Dental Care Ireland and other regulatory bodies, including the Dental Council of Ireland.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Ensuring clinical tests and audits are completed as required on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
- Ensure that all tasks are fully compliant with the scope of practice as set out by the Dental Council of Ireland
- Keep the clinical areas and all equipment and instruments clean, tidy and sterile as appropriate, according to the practice’s health and safety policy, manufacturers’ instructions and the Code of Practice relating to infection control as set out by the Dental Council of Ireland.
- Ensure that adequate stock levels are maintained for the smooth running of the practice and inform appointed staff member when stock levels diminish.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Ensure that any incident relating to patient safety is notified to the Dental Surgeon and is recorded.
- Liaise with reception team to ensure smooth patient communication and transfer of records.
- Liaising with the Practice Manager on any clinical duties.
- Reporting any local facilities issues to the Practice Manager.
Reception tasks and responsibilities, adhoc cover:
- Greeting and registering patients at the reception desk.
- Providing information and reassurance to patients about their treatment.
- Phone and email management
- Daily cashing up exercise for the practice.
- Appointment book management to ensure maximisation of working hours.
- Providing support to clinicians by sending prescriptions, referral letters, x-rays.
- Payor claim administration for GMS/PRSI/VHI/DeCare.
- Claims and ensuring accuracy of claim forms.
- Payment reconciliation.
- Running daily, weekly and monthly reports from Exact.
- Completion of various spreadsheets for accounts purposes (i.e. cash sheet, trackers etc).
- Key holder duties.

Qualifications/Experience:
Leaving Certificate or equivalent Recognised dental nurse qualification
Fluent in written and oral English Familiar with reporting & statistical compilation
At least one year as a dental nurse is an added advantage
Capabilities
- Understanding of basic dental terminology & ability to chart dental records.
- Knowledge of basic dental materials and the use of these materials in each specific area of Dentistry.
- Knowledge of all relevant dental instruments as covered in the Dental Nursing curriculum. This includes the basics in Oral surgery, Endodontics, Periodontics, Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.
- Understanding and implementation of the sterile environment and techniques.
- Competent Chairside assistance skills.
