Healthcare Assistant (Theatre) - UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, Dublin

Overview of role:
UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic are currently recruiting for the role of Healthcare Assistant in our Theatre department.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Respect the privacy and dignity of patients whilst carrying out planned care duties.

Present for duty in a professional manner, punctually and correctly dressed according to Theatre policy.

Help with patient mobility by accompanying patients when walking.

Assist Consultants as leg holder in Theatre for procedures.

Assist with moving and positioning patients under the direction of the Anaesthetist and nursing staff.
-
Moving patients between theatre table, beds, trolley’s using sliding roll board with support from the theatre staff, following the manual handling assessment of individual patients.

Communicate and pass on relevant information to the ward team.

Communicate verbally with Theatre staff and colleagues on issues relating to work schedules or any problems on a daily basis.

Attend departmental and team meetings.

Attend mandatory training e.g. CPR, Patient Moving & Manual Handling, Fire Training etc.

Communicate verbally with patients in a professional manner.
-
Ensure the segregation of clinical and non-clinical waste according to SSC waste policy when disposing of waste, and ensure that other staff are aware of and follow the policy.

Under the supervision of nursing staff, assist with training and supervision of new support staff while they are being orientated and inducted by showing them around the area, advising of the theatre routine.

Under the direct supervision of nursing staff, check all medical equipment required for theatre lists including diathermy, suction, tourniquet, camera, screens, light source theatre lighting, ensuring that the ventilation is on and working, as trained and in line with national theatre protocols.

Daily check stock level and replenish ensuring the environment is prepared for clinical activity.

Stock up supplies, pharmaceutical products on a daily basis.

Transport of instruments to theatre and return it to the correct allocated places.

Escorting patient that have undergone local anaesthetic back to the Day Ward.

Check serile instrument set contents lists, reporting any missing instruments, incorrect instruments and broken instrumentation to CSSD and Theatre Manager/CNM1, according to theatre policy.

Under the supervision of nursing staff, help maintain a sterile field whilst setting up the procedure trolleys, opening up packaging and equipment in a sterile manner.

Under the supervision of nursing staff, help with patient positioning, setting up of theatre equipment, including diathermy, suction, fluids and camera.
-
Be constantly aware of theatre scrub nurses’ needs, obtaining any extra equipment, swabs, sutures, dressings etc. as requested.
-
Dispose of bodily fluids; tissue and clinical waste according to training and in line with trust policy on a daily basis.

Ensure that the anesthetic rooms, recovery and day ward are adequately stocked with sheets, blankets, pillows and pillow cases.

Ensure that the operating tables are ready and waiting in the anaesthetic rooms for the next day and between cases.

Transfer patients from Recovery to Day Ward with a Staff Nurse.
-
Work with transport Nurse team transferring patients from Recovery to the Inpatient ward and bring patients from Inpatient ward to the theatres with the transport Nurses. When working as part of transport team take instruction of duties from Transport Nurse.

Clean trolleys and take them back to the Day Ward. Assist in the cleaning down and preparing bed bays, post patient discharge from the Day Ward.

Ensure that linen basket and bags are available in the sluice room.

Ensure that the dirty laundry is taken to the ground floor.

Check that the Prep Rooms are stocked for the following day.

Ensure that there are enough dressing gowns in the Day Ward for the following day.

Check all theatres to ensure that the Scavenging System is turned off.

Remove clinical waste bags from bins and replace with new clinical waste bags at the end of every shift in theatre, anaesthetic room and dirty utility rooms.

Check and replace all sharp bins as necessary.

Participate with the cleaning of theatre and equipment between patient visits and at the end of lists, in line with Theatre Policy.

Spot clean areas in the event of spillage of bodily fluids and other substances.

Report equipment failures to the Theatre Manager/CNM1s. In line with theatre policy.

Report any Health and Safety/hazards, Manual Handling and Infection Control issues to the Theatre manager/CNM1s.

Work with the Theatre Manager/CNM1s to ensure a safe environment is maintained in order to safeguard the welfare and safety of patients, staff and visitors.
Qualifications & Experience:
Fetac Level 5 Qualification or similar relevant required.
Experience:
Previous experience of working in a caring profession is desirable.
Have the ability to undertake the physical demands of the role.
Be motivated and able to identify potential difficulties and formulate solutions.
Be free from any defect or disease which would render him/her unsuitable to hold office and be in a state of health as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.
Be of good character.

Salary Scale: €38,561 - €45,527 based on a 39 hour working week. Incremental credit will apply to the salary.
