NCHD Theatre Surgical Assistant - UPMC Aut Even Hospital, Kilkenny

Overview of role:
UPMC are recruiting an NCHD within the the theatre department of Aut Even Hospital.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities:
- The post holder will work with all members of the multidisciplinary team, medical and
non-medical to provide a seamless service for patients
- Diagnose and treat patients under the direction of the consultant surgical and medical
staff.
- Will document patients’ assessment, history and physical on admission and write
appropriate follow up comments in case notes in line with the Assessment of Patient
Policy.
- Will conduct daily re – assessment on in –patients as advised by the consultant and or
nursing staff.
- Whilst on duty will conduct three hourly ward visits to address any non-emergency
requests by the Nursing or Multidisciplinary team.
- To carry a Dect Phone at all times while on duty and to response to each call in an
efficient manner.
- Assist the Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in theatres as directed
- Support the medical/nursing team with emergency care of patients.
- Complete medical assessments in pre assessment clinic as required.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests as clinically required
- Initiate and monitor treatment as clinically appropriate and safe
- Carry out clinical procedures as requested by Consultants
i administer IV drugs
ii cannulate/site IV lines
iii venepuncture
iv catheterise male patients
v ECGs
- Participate in the Code Blue emergency response including Code Blue daily huddle
- Discuss care with patients and relatives as appropriate
- To ensure discharge summaries are completed as per Discharge Policy requested by
consultants and or nursing staff.
- Further own knowledge of diagnosis and management
- Participate in programmes of research, education and training
- Ability to access policies on Q-Pulse and to log incidents as required.
Medication Management:
- Will work in line with all Medication Policies relevant to your role.
- Will complete medicine reconciliation as required.
- Will complete appropriateness review as required
Accreditation:
- To work with the clinical team and quality department with processes of care that support compliance with JCI standards.
Training and Audit:
· To complete one Clinical Audit on an annual basis.
- Clinical Audit can be defined as the "systematic review and evaluation of current practice with reference to research-based standards to improve patient care." IMC.
· A team approach maybe to taken to the Selected Clinical Audit, under the guidance of the Orthopaedic Consultant. · All members of staff are expected to attend mandatory training sessions on an annual basis or as appropriate.
- All members of staff are expected to participate in any in house or external training or education sessions appropriate to their position.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- All NCHD’s are required under their IMC Registration to participate in continuing professional development. From time to time the Hospital will host educational events which will generate CPD points.
Committee Membership
- Each NCHD is invited to be a member of the internal Drugs and Therapeutic Committee and the Infection Control Committee.
Expectations:
The NCHD will:
- Contact the appropriate Consultant regarding patient care prior to initiating treatment
- Deal with emergency situations across the hospital site
- Review patients, visitors and staff members following an accident. Complete accident and incident forms
- Access all documents, policies, and procedures and report incidents and complaints through our hospital quality management system – Q-Pulse.
- Maintain detailed and legible case notes regarding all aspects of patient treatment by them

- Be familiar with ward protocols
- Participate in hospital initiatives to improve the quality of patient care
- Be cost conscious and cost effective without compromising patient care
- Demonstrate behaviour consisted with the values of the Hospital
- Maintain patient confidentiality .
Accreditation
· Will familiarise themselves with policies, procedures and guidelines directly related to their clinical care and area.
- Assist in the review of policies, procedures and Guidelines under the direction of the chapter lead/department manager.
General
- Through the course of the working day or week there may be a requirement to work in other areas of the hospital in line with patient requirements as requested by your line manager/deputy or nurse management.
- Staff must produce satisfactory documentary evidence of all training and experience claimed by them, if required to do so by the organisation.

Qualifications & Experience:
Skills Essential to the Post
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Qualifications: - Applicants must be fully registered with Medical Council of Ireland.
- Up to date certification in BLS, ACLS and PALS
Experience:
- Sufficient medical diagnostic and surgical experience and the capability to fulfil the functions of the post
