Typical shift: 9AM -5 PM
Purpose of the Role
The Chef is responsible for preparing and cooking nutritious, well-balanced meals for residents in line with their dietary, medical and cultural needs, while maintaining high standards of food safety, hygiene and presentation in accordance with health service and regulatory requirements.
Key ResponsibilitiesFood Preparation & Meal Service
- Prepare, cook and present meals to a high standard for residents and staff as required
- Cater for special diets including diabetic, low-salt, pureed, soft, fortified and texture‑modified diets
- Ensure meals are appetising, nutritious and appropriate for older persons
- Maintain flexibility to meet residents’ preferences where possible
Food Safety & Hygiene
- Comply fully with HACCP, food safety and infection prevention and control procedures
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised kitchen at all times
- Ensure correct temperature control, storage and labelling of food
- Report any food safety concerns immediately to management
Stock & Kitchen Management
- Assist with stock control and rotation of food supplies
- Minimise food waste and use supplies efficiently
- Work within agreed budgets and follow ordering procedures
- Ensure kitchen equipment is used correctly and report faults promptly
Teamwork & Communication
- Work cooperatively with kitchen assistants, nursing staff and management
- Communicate clearly regarding residents’ dietary needs and changes
- Contribute positively to a respectful and professional workplace
Compliance & Standards
- Adhere to all organisational policies, HIQA standards and relevant legislation
- Participate in inspections, audits and reviews as required
- Attend mandatory training including food safety and infection control
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience working as a Chef or Cook (healthcare or catering environment desirable)
- Proven knowledge of food hygiene and safe food handling
- Ability to follow therapeutic and special diet requirements
- Good organisational and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility and reliability
Desirable
- Experience working in a nursing home, hospital or healthcare setting
- HACCP or Food Safety Level 2 (or willingness to complete)
- Knowledge of texture‑modified diets
Garda Vetting
Appointment is subject to satisfactory Garda Vetting and reference checks.
